Walker dies in 500ft fall

A WALKER has died from head injuries after falling 500ft on a mountain.

The unidentified man, believed to be in his 30s, fell on Y Garn, which is more than 3,000ft high, in Snowdonia, north Wales.

The man, who was fully equipped for the walk, met two female students at the summit and discussed the best way down, said Chris Lloyd, of Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue. The trio made the mistake of walking along a large cornice of overhanging snow which they thought was solid ground.

The snow gave way and caused an avalanche which swept up one of the girls and the man.

“She came to rest quite quickly but sadly he was flushed about 500ft down the gulley,” said Mr Lloyd, adding the woman escaped uninjured.
