The blaze is believed to have started in one of the flats, which was badly damaged. Nearby rooms suffered minor smoke damage, but fire offices said the building’s structure, particularly its fire doors, helped to stop the flames from spreading.

Officers from Humberside Fire and Rescue Service praised the work of a local warden, who helped locate people still inside the building.

The cause of the fire is as yet unknown and an investigation is currently under way.
