'Travesty' alert over dementia sufferers' care

About 50,000 people with dementia will be forced into care homes early because of a lack of support in their own homes, a report claims today.

Most people with dementia would prefer to live in the community yet there is inadequate help with everyday tasks, the Alzheimer's Society study found.

It said that for each "avoidable" month dementia sufferers spend in care homes, the state will face a bill of at least 70m.

More than half of carers in Yorkshire said patients with dementia were not receiving sufficient help, the study said.

The Alzheimer's Society area manager in Yorkshire, Nicki Dyson, said: "It is an absolute travesty that so many people with dementia are being forced to struggle without the care and support they need. The consequences of this represent an unacceptable human and financial cost."
