Treasure trove of fancy dress reopens

pantomime veteran Martin Barrass donned a panto mouse’s costume to reopen Yorkshire’s biggest fancy dress shop at the weekend, peddling thousands of outfits from Victorian gowns to Dick Whittington’s cat.

York Theatre Royal has hired out the costumes worn by the stars of its shows for the past 16 years. And after moving to the De Grey Rooms, next to the historic theatre, its treasure trove of outfits is available again.

Costume hire supervisor Pauline Rourke said: “There are some amazing outfits in the collection either made by our wardrobe team or genuine vintage pieces that have been donated to the theatre.

“We’ve got all kinds of panto villains, dresses from a production of Northanger Abbey and some wonderful genuine Victorian shoes.”
