Treat for young musicians

budding young musicians from Yorkshire were treated to a special visit to hear some of the world’s leading pianists.

Dame Fanny Waterman, the chairman of the Leeds International Piano Competition, invited pupils from the Wykebeck Primary School in Leeds to join her at one of the competition’s early stages and listen to competitors performing in Leeds University’s Great Hall.

She is pictured with Michelle Zhou, Kalif Armitage, Sophie Walker, Nicola Dunkova and Lily-rose Miller The school has recently named its new Dame Fanny Waterman Community Centre in her honour, after she visited earlier this year to support a music project.

The competition, which has discovered some of the greatest pianists of the last 50 years, is this year showcasing the work of 80 pianists from 20 countries. It runs until September 16.
