Tree children pledge to be ever green

Ruby Rainbow, six, of Western Primary School was one of the children from more than six primary schools across Harrogate who decorated a tree on the Stray with more than 100 environmental pledges to mark the 20th anniversary of Bettys and Taylors' Trees for Life campaign.

The hornbeam tree – the first one to be planted in the campaign – was adorned with promises ranging from pledges to recycle paper, like little Ruby above, toys and clothes, to growing vegetables, walking to school and turning off lights in empty rooms.

Sam Gibson, of Bettys and Taylors, said: "These environmental promises show how much young people in Harrogate care about the planet.

"The children had a brilliant time helping come up with the promises and we hope it can make a real difference."

Staff and customers at Bettys and Taylors have helped plant three million trees on four continents since launching the campaign. Last year the company pledged to help protect an area of rainforest the size of Yorkshire.
