Tree planting chance for residents

THE public are being urged to get involved in helping plant a new community woodland in York.

York Council has secured a Forestry Commission grant of £6,961 to create the woodland of 2,700 trees – mainly oak and ash – and shrubs native to Britain.

The trees on Bootham Stray will be interspersed with open glades planted with wildflowers and linked by pathways which will also connect with residential areas.

An event for the public to help with the planting will be staged on Sunday. Additional tree planting on Bootham Stray has also taken place north of the Nestlé works and to the west of Wigginton Road.

The area of native woodland is being created largely through natural regeneration and by 385 trees planted earlier this year as part of a Higher Level Stewardship Agreement for Bootham Stray and Clifton Backies in an environment grant scheme run by Natural England.

Sunday’s event between 10am and 4pm is being organised by the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV). Residents can find out more about the community planting day by calling the BTCV’s York office on 01904 644300.
