Tree surgeon with creative flair

Crocodiles, snakes and birds of prey were unexpected additions to the showground – in the form of wooden sculptures formed in front of visitors' eyes by one man and his chainsaw.

Mark Bell, a tree surgeon for more than 25 years and from Selby, created the intricate carvings himself with just his saw – watched by a fascinated group of onlookers.

"I started out by watching other people," said Mr Bell, who was appearing at the Forestry section of the showground.

"I started slowly then began to get more intricate. I have always been quite artistic and enjoy painting. I have been a tree surgeon since 1983 so am very used to the saw. I find it fairly easy-going to do."

Visitors to the Forestry section were also able to enjoy lumberjack competitions and pole climbing.
