Trial date set for man accused over acid and gun attack killing

A 22-YEAR-OLD man has appeared before a crown court judge after being charged with murder following an acid and gun attack in Bradford.

Lee Calvert was originally charged with attempting to murder 50-year-old father Barry Selby.

Mr Selby was shot in the leg and suffered 50 per cent burns to his body when he was attacked in a bedroom at his home on Rayleigh Street in the East Bowling area of Bradford.

Officers said the attack, which left Mr Selby in a serious condition, happened at about 2.10am.

Mr Selby died in hospital four days after the attack on October 14. Detectives charged Calvert with murder on Tuesday.

Yesterday, Calvert, of Stirling Crescent, Holme Wood, Bradford, appeared before Judge Roger Thomas QC using a video link with Armley Prison in Leeds where he is remanded in custody.

During the 20-minute preliminary hearing at Bradford Crown Court, Judge Thomas confirmed that Calvert could stand trial in April.

His case was then adjourned until January 31 next year for an interim plea and case management hearing.

Calvert appeared on the television link alongside Robert Woodhead, 28, of Fred’s Place, Tyersal, Bradford, and 21-year-old Joseph Lowther, of Copgrove Road, Holme Wood, Bradford.

Woodhead and Lowther have been charged with possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life in relation to a connected shooting incident at a house in Farway, Holme Wood, on the night before Mr Selby was attacked.

All three men were remanded back into custody until November 27 when there will be a further review hearing.

At the time of the attack, West Yorkshire Police said Mr Selby suffered burns injuries from a corrosive substance.

Specialist detectives from the homicide and major enquiry team were drafted in to help the investigation.

Mr Selby’s daughter Samantha paid tribute to her father earlier this month, calling him a “very hard-working, honest, caring family man.”
