Trial run for council vans powered by human waste

VANS powered by human waste took to the streets yesterday as part of a trial run by Kelda Water Services, which is in charge of Yorkshire's water and sewage services.

The vehicles were filled up with biomethane at Sheffield's Woodhouse Mill sewage works, where specialist equipment has been installed to collect and clean the fuel.

The gas is produced at what project manager Paul Kelly called the "back end" of the treatment process, when water which has been flushed away has been filtered to make sludge.

The vans currently using the biogas from Woodhouse Mill are owned by Sheffield Council.

Coun Shaffaq Mohammed, the authority's environment spokesman, said a diesel van would cost 14,000 compared with 15,000 for the gas-powered but added they were cheaper to run.
