Tribute to city's 1950s singing star

FANS of Hull's golden singing star of the Fifties, David Whitfield, will have the chance to see his hits performed live on stage in his home city.

A tribute to the singer, produced by the David Whitfield Commemorative Association, is the centrepiece of a nostalgia show at Hull City Hall next week.

His songs will be performed by the international tenor Martyn Dominique with Duncan "Chase Me" Norvelle providing a comic turn and Hull-based Johnny Pat and the Aces playing music from the era.

Whitfield, who had worldwide success with songs such as Cara Mia and Answer Me, was the first British artist to sell over a million copies of a song in America.

Over 50 years since topping the charts, he is still one of only six artists to have spent 10 or more consecutive weeks at the top of the UK singles chart.

Since his death in 1980, loyal fans in Yorkshire have set up a museum in Stoneferry in his memory and have had a rose named after him.

Tickets for the show on Wednesday, March 17, cost 15 and are available from the Hull City Council Booking Office, or by calling 01482 226655.
