“We are absolutely devastated by our tragic loss, and would ask that we be left to grieve in peace at this extremely sad time.”

Yesterday police said a 22-year-old man, from Headingley, who has been arrested on suspicion of supplying drugs, was released on police bail pending further inquiries.

Officers were called to the halls of residence at 5.45am on Sunday by the ambulance service, which reported a sudden death.

A force spokesman has said it was not treating the teenager’s death as suspicious.

A post mortem examination has taken place and the results of toxicology tests are awaited.

An inquest into the teenager’s death is expected to open this week.

Mr Dixon was a former pupil at Hipperholme and Lightcliffe High School, at Hipperholme, Halifax, where he was understood to have been head boy, and the lead singer with local band Signed Anonymous.

In a statement, the university said: “In the early hours of the morning on Sunday 8 January, Leeds Metropolitan University first year student Adam Dixon sadly passed away.

“His family have been informed and our thoughts are with them at this very difficult time.

“Adam, who was studying a multimedia technology course, was a very popular student and will be greatly missed.

“We are offering support to students who have been affected by Adam’s death and we are working with the police and the coroner’s office whilst they conduct their investigations.”
