Tributes to crush-tragedy businessman

TRIBUTES have been paid to the boss of an East Riding civil engineering firm who died in an accident when he became trapped under a tipping trailer.

Ian Woolfitt, 68, managing director of Beverley-based Wold Construction Company Ltd, was killed in the incident in Station Road, Lockington.

His company has undertaken several major projects, including a £2m scheme of safety improvements to the A1079 for East Riding Council two years ago.

Council chairman Kay West said: “Mr Woolfitt was an outstanding local businessman and his company developed the new roundabout at Hodsow Lane on the A1079, which opened last year.

“This project has been of great benefit to the community of Pocklington and the surrounding area and is an excellent example of the high standard of work that Mr Woolfitt and his company are known for.”

The firm’s contracts manager, Simon Higgins, said: “We are saddened to confirm the death of Ian Woolfitt, the managing director of Wold Construction Company Ltd, following an unfortunate accident on Tuesday, 24th April.

“Our thoughts are with his family at this time.”
