Diane Cuthbertson, who took up the sport five years ago, and was a member of Filey Brigg Diving Club, died on Sunday after completing a dive to 30 metres.

The Tot Stop nursery owner was well known in Driffield and ran a free creche at the Driffield Show every year.

People have been leaving cards and floral tributes outside the nursery she ran on Skerne Road.

Husband Carl said the 59-year-old always “bent over backwards to help people the best she could, especially when children were having problems.”

She had dived to 30 metres and was on her way back up “perfectly calm” with her buddy when she started to indicate that she was out of air. However checks of her gauges showed she still had air. He said: “She died for some reason between three metres and the surface having successfully completed the dive. She just loved doing it - in a way it’s comforting.”

The official cause of her death is still undetermined.

Son Adam said she would be missed because of her “giving nature”, adding: “When she used to go diving she would always bring food for the rest of the diving club and she did that wherever she was, even when we were on holiday.”

Driffield Show David Tite said the death was “devastating” , and said: “Diane worked with us on Driffield show day for over 10 years and had a temporary base at the showground previously for a number of years. It is absolutely tragic that we have lost her.”
