Tributes to ‘friend of the stars’ Amy Watts

Amy, 37, had been suffering from colon cancer and had been hoping to have treatment at the Spire Leeds Hospital after doctors in America, where she was living, were unable to help her.

Friends had launched an appeal, Hold Amy’s Hand, to raise £100,000 to pay for the treatment, her travel costs from America and living costs.

The appeal was supported by a host of celebrities including Simon Cowell, Susan Boyle and Patsy Palmer.

Simon Cowell had tweeted about Amy, calling on his 11 millions followers to #holdamyshand.

Friends and colleagues posted their tributes to Amy on social media sites.

Author Tina Campanella said: “Thank you for every moment of friendship you gave me Amy Watts.”

Dan Wootton, head of showbiz at The Sun, tweeted: “Devastating to hear of the passing of Amy Watts, the former showbiz columnist at the Daily Star. Far far too young.”

Katie Hind, Los Angeles editor for the Mirror group, said: “Night night you funny, loving, clever and strong woman. I love you xxxx.”

The Daily Star tweeted: “Rest in peace, Amy Watts. So young, such a brave fight. Our love and thoughts are with you and all your family today.”

The campaign @Holdamyshand on Twitter said: “Heartbroken to tell you our beloved Amy passed away early today. Her family were with her. Sincere thanks for all support. #holdamyshand x”

The name for Hold Amy’s Hand came from the journalist’s love of Doctor Who.

In one episode, the Doctor talks about things needed to get across the universe such as warp drive, adding: “You know the thing you need most of all? You need a hand to hold.”
