Her family live in Brough, East Yorkshire, and confirmed the recovery of her body by French authorities yesterday morning.

Her grandson Simon said in a statement on the social networking site Facebook: “We would like to thank everyone who helped in the search, whether by sharing through social media, contacting the Press or actually going out and looking.

“Your efforts meant the world to us; they made us feel supported and they showed us how loved she was - that so many people were so desperate to find her.”

The statement added: “Carol was an amazing woman who lived an amazing life.

“She was dearly loved by many and will be hugely missed by all of us. Personally, I am taking some comfort in that her last moments were spent doing something she loved.”

Mrs Sheridan is believed to have moved to France from her home in Driffield about two years ago.

Mountain Rescue teams and Interpol had taken part in the search.

A spokesman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: “We were notified of the death of a British national in France on 6 November and we are providing consular assistance to the family at this difficult time.”
