Tributes to soldier who was 'bright star'

Family, friends and colleagues yesterday paid tribute to one of the Army's "brightest stars", Corporal Johnathan Moore, including his sisters Heather Moore and Emma Whitelaw.

Cpl Moore, of The Royal Scots Borderers, 1st Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland (1 Scots), died in an explosion in Afghanistan last month. The 22-year-old was on a routine night patrol in Helmand Province, when an improvised explosive device detonated, killing him and Private Sean McDonald, 26.

More than 200 colleagues and family members paid tribute to Cpl Moore at Cadzow Parish Church in Hamilton, Lanarkshire. Mourners wept as his coffin, with his cap and belt, was carried in to the church.

Lt/Col Charlie Herbert, Commanding Officer, 1 Scots, said Cpl Moore "was destined for the top". "It was indeed as the Regimental Sergeant Major said to me on the night of his death: 'Corporal Moore personified everything there is about being a soldier'. I can think of no more fitting tribute to him."
