Tributes to sportsman after nightclub killing

TRIBUTES have been paid to a rugby union player who died after being punched in a nightclub.

Andrew Feather, 38, who played for Halifax RUFC, had been celebrating a victory with teammates when he was assaulted at Liquid, a club on Commercial Street in Halifax.

A 25-year-old man was later arrested in Huddersfield on suspicion of manslaughter and remained in police custody last night.

A spokesman for the rugby club said Mr Feather was a loyal member who was held in high regard.

Mr Feather had been with the rugby club for more than a decade and had previously served as club secretary for a year.

Darren Emmerson, a friend and fellow player, described Mr Feather as a “true gentleman” who was liked by everybody.

“He was well liked by everybody. I don’t know of any enemies Andy had.”

The club cancelled all training this week as a mark of respect for Mr Feather.

Mr Feather, who was from Hipperholme, had played with the second team on Saturday and had been out with fellow players.

He was hit during an incident in the nightclub at around 2.20am on Sunday.

Despite receiving treatment from paramedics Mr Feather sadly died at the scene.

Detectives have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.
