True cost of that puppy in the window

A puppy peers out of an egg box to highlight the issue of puppy farming, which the Dogs Trust has dubbed "battery farming of dogs".

People who buy a dog from a newspaper advert, the internet or a pet shop may unwittingly be buying a pet from a puppy farm, the charity warned today.

They said that dogs in the farms are kept in small pens with no daylight and little opportunity to socialise or exercise.

Dogs from puppy farms are prone to health and behavioural problems as a result of poor breeding conditions and being separated from their mothers too early.
