Trust makes greyhounds a pet subject

AN initiative is being launched by the North Yorkshire Retired Greyhound Trust to try to persuade more people to take on theanimals as pets, by dispelling myths about caring for the racing breed.

The trust, which homes greyhounds at the end of their racing careers, will have a stand at Pets at Home in Clifton Moor, York, on Saturday and Sunday.

Karen Fraser, from the trust, said: "This is a great opportunity for people who are considering a dog as a pet to come down, meet some of our own pet greyhounds and find out a bit more about what is involved in owning one as a pet.

"When greyhounds retire from racing they undergo a transformation, becoming couch potatoes and loyal companions.

"They only need two 20 minute walks a day, so they are easy dogs to keep. And, contrary to popular belief, many greyhounds can be found sharing homes with cats and other breeds of dogs."
