Trust may take over Herriot attraction

HAMBLETON’S flagship attraction The World of James Herriot could be placed in the hands of a trust under plans to secure its future.

Council bosses say placing the centre under the wing of a charity will put it in a better position to rake in cash from the grant-making bodies.

Originally, sale of the museum to the private sector was on the cards. But councillors have now voted no to the idea. Cabinet members were told it was clear from discussions with one interested company that it was not a viable option.

Officers will now prepare papers on creating a trust – exploring the financial implications and set-up costs – before a final decision is taken on the centre’s future.

“The World of James Herriot is an asset to the district and its importance to the tourism industry and particularly to the town of Thirsk is well recognised,” said cabinet member Nigel Clack.

“The council has owned and managed it for the last 11 years but at a time when there is increasing pressure on budgets we must now look at the level of funding it is allocated and whether there is a better option for it.”

A board of trustees would be established with membership from museum and marketing professionals, an accountant and solicitor; and representatives from the community and council.

Coun Clack added: “A trust opens up more avenues for raising funds and bringing in new income streams. We believe it is the right route to secure the future of the centre.”
