Tsunami alert lifted after Indonesia quake

A powerful earthquake struck in the sea off eastern Indonesia yesterday, prompting officials to briefly trigger a tsunami warning.

The US Geological Survey said the 7.2 magnitude quake off Papua province was centred just 13 miles beneath the ocean floor.

It rattled the town of Tual on nearby Maluku island, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The Indonesian meteorological and geophysics agency lifted a tsunami warning 90 minutes after the earthquake struck, saying the threat of destructive waves had passed.
