Tube workers start overtime ban

London Underground workers launched a ban on overtime yesterday which unions said will affect services following the end of a 24-hour strike that caused huge disruption in the capital.

LU said a normal service was operated on all Tube lines yesterday after drivers, station staff, signallers and other staff ended their walkout on Tuesday night.

The Rail Maritime and Transport union accused Transport for London (TfL) of cutting jobs by the "back door" by not filling hundreds of vacancies among ticket office and station staff over the summer.

The RMT and the Transport Salaried Staffs Association are in dispute with TfL over plans to cut 800 jobs, but the unions claimed yesterday that about 250 have already been axed.

Three further 24-hour strikes are planned to start from the evenings of October 3, November 2 and November 28, although it is likely that fresh talks will be held in a bid to avert more disruption.
