Tuning up for music marathon

The home of one of Yorkshire's most iconic brass bands is hoping to use its musical heritage to raise thousands of pounds during a 24 hour "musicathon" next month.

Grimethorpe, near Barnsley, featured in the the 1990s film Brassed Off, which followed the fortunes of the village’s collliery band, and made the community world famous.

The music marathon will involve volunteer players, including vicar Father Peter Needham who plays the cornet, and more musicians are required to sign up to take part.

Those playing at the event, which will be held at St Luke’s Church starting at 10am on Friday, April 23, and ending at 10am the next day, will raise their own sponsorship.

Organiser Jennifer Clarke, shown above with the vicar at the church, said people did not need to worry about the standard of their playing and added that the aim was simply to have 24 hours of music making. She added: “Grimethorpe is famous for its colliery band and the community sees music as an important part of the village’s identity.”

All proceeds will go to the Grimethorpe Fund, which pays for improvements to the church and other community activities.
