Turbines plan near historic racecourse opposed

Parish councillors are objecting to plans to erect two wind turbines close to an historic racecourse.

The 20m high turbines would generate energy for Wallis Grange Farm, Kiplingcotes, on Etton Wold, but Etton Parish Council says they would spoil an area of outstanding natural beauty and impact on Kiplingcotes Racecourse, venue of the annual race which has been run over the Wolds since 1514, and which is reputedly the oldest flat race in the country. John Thirsk is seen riding to victory in this year's event.

East Riding planners say there is no evidence that racegoers or tourists would be put off by the turbines, which would be close to farm buildings and a

plantation.

But they are recommending refusal at a meeting in Beverley on April 12, on the grounds that they would be too close to a cottage occupied by a farm worker – despite the occupant writing to say they support the proposal. However, planners insist farmworkers' homes should not be subject to "unacceptable" noise levels.
