Tussauds visitors expected to wax lyrical as William and Kate finally go on display

The royal couple were in a pose and setting taken from the day of their engagement announcement at St James’s Palace, with William standing with his hands clasped in front of him and Kate, in her now famous blue Issa dress, smiling broadly next to him.

Visitors to the famous London attraction have been continually asking for couple to be added to the exhibits since news of the betrothal was released in autumn 2010.

Madame Tussauds is expecting the Cambridges to be the most popular wax figures and they may even surpass interest in the Queen.

Sculptor Stephen Mansfield created William’s wax head and has worked on high profile figures like David Cameron, the Duchess of Cornwall and David Beckham, but said the interest in the new royal figures was likely to surpass these celebrities.

The artist said: “Visitors have been demanding this for ages.”

Madame Tussauds said they approached St James’s Palace to have a sitting with the royal couple for their wax works, which cost £150,000 each, but due to their busy schedules a time could not be arranged so pictures were used instead.

A team of around 30 worked for four months creating each of the models from sculpting and colouring the heads, to painting the eyes, creating the head of hair a strand at a time and styling clothes and accessories.
