TV Dragon encourages students to learn about enterprise with £10 each

MORE than 3,000 students from across Yorkshire have taken on a challenge to turn £10 into more than £50,000 in the space of a month through enterprising ideas.

The Enterprise UK's Make Your Mark campaign is being led by the organisation's chairman Peter Jones from TV's Dragons' Den.

A 10 note will be given to all the young people taking part – so they can then come up with creative and enterprising ideas that "make money and make a difference" – and to return that 10 at the end of the month.

Last year, Laisterdyke Business and Enterprise College in Bradford was highly commended in the competition's social impact category.

The school's head of enterprise Gerard Liston said: "The tenner challenge is a great way to fire up young people and put responsibility in their hands.

"When we ran this with year 10 students last year, we had everything from a group performing Asian Bollywood performances to others selling red roses the day before Valentine's Day."

Laisterdyke student Aisha Ali said: "Last year we came up with the idea of sharing our Asian culture with a school in a completely different area near Leeds. It was great fun and we made a bit of money, but we were amazed by the impact it had on the students at the Leeds school. It made me realise that it is possible to make things happen if you put your mind to it – and it needn't cost a fortune."

Mr Jones said: "Make Your Mark with a Tenner empowers young people from across Yorkshire to make their ideas happen. We know that young people are increasingly concerned about the challenges society faces, and we're aiming to show that by acting on an enterprising idea, it is possible to make money and a real difference."
