TV historian Dan to be centre of attention at opening ceremony

THERE will be no need for rescue missions when TV historian Dan Snow visits Hull next month.

The presenter will be formally opening Hull History Centre – which has proved a hit since opening in January, notching up more than 18,000 visitors.

Snow, who hit the headlines last month after mounting a Dunkirk-inspired rescue mission to bring home travellers who had been stuck in France because of the Icelandic ash cloud, will unveil a plaque at the 10.7m centre off Freetown Way on June 7.

He will go on to deliver a public lecture on "The Importance of History" at the Guildhall in the afternoon – with a live link on to a screen in the History Centre where more people can watch.

Hull is the first city in the UK to bring together city and university archives, as well as local studies resources under one roof. The new centre contains 9,000 metres of archives dating back centuries, including the 1299 Royal Charter.

Snow is a regular contributor to The One Show on BBC1 and has presented TV programmes on Britain's naval history and on the fall of Quebec in 1759.

His lecture will take place at the Guildhall at 2.15pm. Tickets for both venues are free and available from the History Centre, Worship Street, Hull, by calling 01482 300 300.
