TV historian to help guide visitors through family past

AMATEUR historians are being given the chance to unearth more about long-lost heritage through the centuries with advice from experts.

Representatives from history groups will be at the North Yorkshire County Record Office for the annual History Day later this month.

Social historian Ruth Goodman, who has appeared on a series of television programmes including Edwardian Farm, The One Show and Victorian Pharmacy, will also be in Northallerton to talk about the key events in the lives of ordinary people in the past.

Signed copies of her books will also be available for purchase at the History Day, which will be held at the Hambleton Forum in Northallerton on Saturday, March 26, from 10am to 3.30pm.

Special family history one-to-one advice sessions will be available.

The county council’s executive member for adult and community services, Coun Chris Metcalfe, said: “Finding out about your family’s roots and local history can be one of the most interesting and rewarding of all activities, and the county council’s History Day will be providing a wide range of experts to set you off in the right direction.”

Organisations represented on the day will include Bedale Archaeology and History Society, Brompton Heritage Group, Catterick Village Local History Group, Cleveland Family History Society, Upper Dales and the Middleham and Dales Family History Groups.
