TV presenter to present cycling proficiency certificates to city children

TELEVISION presenter Gethin Jones will mingle with Congolese refugee children and vintage bicycles in Hull today to drum up support for a mass participation cycling event.

Mr Jones, an ambassador for Sky Ride, which aims to get thousands of people onto two wheels on Sunday August 21, will present the children with cycling proficiency certificates flanked by historic bikes from the city’s Streetlife Museum.

They will be joined by Dan Goodey, Yorkshire recreational manager for British Cycling, and Councillor Terry Geraghty, Hull Council’s portfolio holder for culture and leisure.

Hull is one of 15 UK cities that will be taking part in Sky Ride, an event that aims to encourage people to rediscover the pleasure of cycling.

The city centre will be closed to traffic for the Sunday event so cyclists can pedal safely.

The organisers hope hundreds of cyclists of all ages will take part, covering the 6.3km route taking in some of the city’s landmarks including The Deep, the Guildhall, the city hall and Queens Gardens.

Mr Jones will return to the city to take part in the Hull event alongside professional athletes from Team Sky, one of the leading teams in this year’s Tour de France.

Coun Geraghty said he hoped to make it an annual event. He added: “Getting out and about on a bike is fun and good for you. We’ve always been a cycle friendly city, and I hope that as many people as possible will take advantage of the city centre roads being closed for the day and enjoy a family day out.

“I’m delighted that Sky Ride is coming to Hull and hope that it will become an annual event.”
