Tweed and friend are both cleared of rape

Jack Tweed was yesterday cleared of raping a teenager.

Tweed, the widower of Big Brother star Jade Goody, and his friend, Anthony Davis were accused of raping the young student at Tweed's east London home in the early hours of September 4 last year.

But the jury at Snaresbrook Crown Court in east London acquitted the 22-year-old club promoter after he described sex with the then 19-year-old, who said she was "frozen with fear", as consensual.

Davis was also acquitted of rape.

There were cheers of celebration from friends and family of the defendant.

Tweed told of his relief outside the court and said he now wanted to rebuild his life.

He issued a statement through his solicitor, Philip Smith, which read: "I'm relieved that the jury have taken a matter of minutes to see through these scurrilous and completely groundless allegations.

"I now want to put the last eight months behind me and rebuild my life as a 22-year-old young man."

Tweed interrupted his solicitor to add: "I'd first like to thank my family and friends and everyone who stood by me."

Tweed and Davis were alleged to have attacked the teenager after meeting her at the Embassy club in Mayfair.

Linda Strudwick, prosecuting, said the woman was shy, sober and "made it plain to both defendants that she was not interested in them sexually".

Both men denied rape.
