The accident, which happened at about 5.45pm on Saturday on the A171 near to the Flask Inn close the village of Cloughton between Whitby and Scarborough, involved a black Citroën car and the motorcycle.

The bike rider, from Scarborough and aged in his late 30s, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. North Yorkshire Police said officers are supporting his family at “this distressing time”.

Officers drafted in a specialist dog section to trace the occupants of the Citroën car who fled on foot into the nearby Harwood Dale Forest following the collision.
