TWO men were fighting for their lives last night after a crash involving a bus in Yorkshire.

A total of 15 people were hurt in the collision between the bus and a VW Golf car on the A638 Doncaster Road, near Crofton, Wakefield.

West Yorkshire Police said two of the casualties had suffered “life-threatening” injuries.

A further four people sustained serious injuries in the crash, which happened at about 2.10pm.

The scene of the incident is close to Doncaster Road’s Redbeck railway bridge.

David Baines, from the nearby Redbeck Farm Shop, said there had been a number of accidents on the road over the years but this was the worst.

Three of the casualties were transferred to Leeds General Infirmary by the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

Others were taken by road ambulance to Wakefield’s Pinderfields Hospital and Pontefract General Infirmary.

The bus involved in the incident was a single-deck 149 Arriva Yorkshire service.

Doncaster Road was closed between its Lodge Lane and Black Road junctions into the evening as police carried out a detailed examination of the scene.

Witnesses are being asked to ring West Yorkshire Police’s major collision inquiry team on 01924 293047.
