Two dead in car crash

Two people have died in a car crash in South Yorkshire.

A 76-year-old man and a 71-year-old woman, both from Mottram, Greater Manchester, were killed when their black Rover 75 collided with a black Audi A5, on the A616 Whams Road, between Langsett and Crow Edge.

The driver of the Audi, a 34-year-old man from Halifax, was unhurt.

South Yorkshire Police said the accident happened at 5.30pm on Thursday near the junction with Bents Road and Lee Lane.

A force spokeswoman said the two cars crashed as the Rover, driven by the 76-year-old man, attempted to enter the A616 from Bents Road.

Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident, or who may have seen either vehicle just before it happened, to call the Accident Witness Helpline on 0114 2202970.
