Two face corrupt driving licence charges

FIFTEEN people, including two from West Yorkshire, have appeared in court charged in connection with an inquiry into an alleged conspiracy to corruptly obtain driving licences.

All the defendants, aged 25-54 and from London, Manchester, Leicestershire and West Yorkshire, were granted unconditional bail following a brief hearing at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court.

No pleas were taken from the 11 men and four women, who were charged following a joint investigation between Warwickshire Police and the Driving Standards Agency.

The inquiry, which focused on a driving test centre in Nuneaton, led to 39 people having their driving licences revoked.

Andrew Cursley, 45, of St Nicolas Road, Nuneaton, and Bushra Chugtai, 54, of Roehampton Drive, Wigston, Leicestershire, are each charged with five counts of conspiracy to defraud.

Saadit Ali, 25, of St Helens Place, Leyton, London; Mubarak Fasal, 38, of Southdown Road, Leicester; Zakia Hanif, 45, and Mohammed Ditta, 46, both of Red Rose Crescent, Manchester; Shahida Naveed, 41, and Mohammad Ali, 48, both of Somerby Road, Barking, London; Asiya Sidat, 34, and Mahmad Sidat, 32, both of Broomsdale Road, Batley, West Yorkshire; Javed Iqbal, 36, of MacFarren Street, Longsight, Manchester; Haviz Ghani, 40, of Nigel Road, Forest Gate, London; Raza Ur Rehman, 41, of Birchdale Road, Forest Gate; and Mahomed Ibrahim, 51, of Evington Lane, Leicester, are all charged with one count of conspiracy to defraud.

Mujaffar Patel, 30, of Copdale Road, Leicester, faces a single count of perverting the course of justice.

The case against all the defendants was sent to Birmingham Crown Court, where a further hearing will take place on May 8.
