Two hurt by blast under pavement

Two people were taken to hospital yesterday after an explosion in a city street.

They were walking along Fairfax Street in Coventry at about 2.45pm when the blast came from beneath the pavement. It was caused by an electrical problem in a connection between two sections of underground cable.

The two pedestrians, a man and a woman, both about 20, suffered burns to their arms, legs, faces and hair and were taken to hospital."

More than 230 homes and businesses experienced a power cut following the explosion.

Power distribution company Central Networks said such an incident was "incredibly unusual".
