Two-month reprieve for carers’ centre

Opposition councillors have won a two-month reprieve for a threatened carers service.

Hull Council was due to remove funding from the Carers Centre, Hull, this week, which has been providing support to carers in the city since 1999.

A three-year contract was to be awarded to City Health Care Partnership instead.

At yesterday’s full council meeting, Labour councillors announced that due to a Liberal Democrat “call-in,” the current funding arrangements had been extended for two months.

Coun Abigail Bell said: “Now we’re waiting for a meeting on July 2 in the hope we can persuade the council to think again.

“There are a lot of questions that need answering about the whole process.

“I’m still astonished that the Labour-run Council chose Carers’ Week to announce funding had been slashed for the centre.”
