Mr Blakelock, a father of three, was murdered by a machete-wielding gang 25 years ago during riots in Tottenham, north London 25 years ago.

The police spokesman said the two men, who would have been about 27 and 21 years old in 1985, are both originally from Tottenham.

A third suspect, aged 40, who was arrested in Suffolk in February, also remains on police bail.

Pc Blakelock and his colleague Pc Richard Coombes were attacked as they tried to protect firefighters as violence spiralled on the estate.

The unrest was sparked by the death of Cynthia Jarrett, 49, who collapsed during a police raid on her home.

A fresh inquiry into the officer's death began in December 2003 after a review identified new lines of inquiry.

Officers at the Met's homicide and serious crime command are understood to have obtained new evidence that led them to the three suspects.

Six people were originally charged with the murder, including Winston Silcott, Mark Braithwaite and Engin Raghip. The three were convicted in 1987 but cleared on appeal four years later.

Three youths were also charged with murder but did not face trial after a judge ruled their questioning was inadmissible.
