TWO soldiers have been killed in North Yorkshire after the car they were driving in left the road near Catterick Garrison and hit a tree.

North Yorkshire Police are appealing for information after the crash on Leyburn Road, near the entrance to Catterick Golf Club, at 8.05pm yesterday.

The driver, a 23-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene and the passenger, a 20-year-old woman, was taken by ambulance to Darlington Memorial Hospital where she later died.

Police say both the man and the woman, who were in a black Seat Leon car, are serving Army personnel based locally.

A spokesman said: “Relatives have been informed but we are not in a position to identify them at this time.

“The road remained closed until 1.50am on Sunday while the scene was investigated by the police and the vehicle recovered.”

Witnesses to the collision or anyone who may have seen the black Seat Leon car prior to the incident, should contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 1, and speak to the force control room, quoting reference number 12140017360.
