South Yorkshire Police said his Mercedes Vito van ran off the road when a yellow Ford Transit van was trying to overtake, close to Rose Lane.

During the overtaking manoeuvre the yellow van also collided with a Ford Ka which was travelling in the opposite direction.

The Ka driver, a 54-year-old Doncaster woman, was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Two men from the yellow van, aged 17 and 19, were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Police investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision are trying to trace a dark coloured car that carried out the same overtaking manoeuvre just moments before the fatal collision.

It failed to stop after the crash.

The dark car and the yellow van had been trying to overtake the Mercedes Vito van and a silver Land Rover Freelander at the time of the collision.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "It is believed that the collision has happened after the dark car and Ford Transit started to overtake the Freelander and Vito van.

"During the manoeuvre it was reported that the yellow van collided with a blue Ford Ka travelling from Askern and then collided with the Mercedes Vito van.
