Two victims of level crossing train crash named by police

Paul Hodge, 47, of Grimsby, died when the Volvo car he was driving was hit by the 7.26pm Cleethorpes to Scunthorpe service at Great Coates automatic half-barrier level crossing on Tuesday evening. His passenger, 40-year-old David Williams, of Cleethorpes, died in an ambulance as he was being taken to hospital.

In a statement, Mr Hodge’s family described the former soldier as a “loving father, grandfather, son and brother and will be dearly missed by everyone who knew and loved him”.

Carolyn Woodward paid tribute to her fiancé Mr Williams.

She said: “He was my rock, my best friend, the most caring man I have ever known. He loved family life and was devoted to the grandchildren. We thought we would have a lot more years together. Life is going to be so empty without him. ”

The cause of the crash is being investigated. Nobody on the train carrying five passengers, a driver and a conductor, was hurt.

A couple who died when their car was involved in a head-on collision at Gate Helmsley, near York, last Friday have been named as great-grandparents Dennis Green, 81, and his wife Doreen, 80. They had celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary only the day before the crash and a family party had been planned for the weekend to mark the occasion. They had lived in Strensall, near York, for more than 50 years.

A family statement said: “They had a wonderful and happy marriage and we draw some small comfort from the fact that they are still together.”
