Two women arrested on suspicion of running brothel in waterside flat

Police in Leeds yesterday arrested two women on suspicion of running a brothel in the heart of the city

Officers from West Yorkshire's city neighbourhood policing team arrested the pair – aged 30 and 29 – at a riverside flat at Langtons Wharf on The Calls shortly after midday.

Officers later said paraphernalia associated with the sex industry was found inside.

After being interviewed, the two women were bailed pending further enquiries.

A spokesman said last night this would also include a separate financial investigation to establish exactly where any money made from possible criminal activity was going.

If officers can trace any cash or assets and successfully argue that they were criminally acquired, they could be confiscated under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002.

Yesterday's arrests were made after police officers received information from concerned local residents about activities at the waterside flat.

Chief Inspector Vernon Francis, of West Yorkshire Police's City and Holbeck division, said: "These arrests are a prime example of how seriously we take the concerns of local people, and demonstrate that we're always willing to act on the information we receive.

He added: "People living in the city can have every confidence that we will always listen to their concerns and we will take action to address them."
