UK to be hotter than Majorca for holiday

The best weather so far this year is being predicted for the Bank Holiday weekend, with temperatures on Monday higher than in holiday destinations Majorca and Cote D’Azur.

Temperatures will get gradually warmer throughout the weekend and will creep above 20C (68F) in parts of the country on Monday, compared to just 16C (61F) on Majorca and 18C (64F) in the South of France, according to the Met Office.

In Britain, central and southern parts of England away from the coast are expected to see the best of the weather.

In Yorkshire, it is expected to remain dry with highs of 17C (63F) tomorrow and 19C (66F) on Bank Holiday Monday when it is also expected to be sunny.

Sarah Holland, of the Met Office, said: “Gradually we’ll see temperatures pick up as we go through the weekend.”

She said tomorrow will have a misty start but give way to a dry day and sunny spells with the best weather in the Midlands and eastern areas.

On Monday another cloudy morning will clear and the warm day could see temperatures as high as 23C (73F).

She added: “For many people it’s going to be a pleasant Bank Holiday weekend with some bright spells around and temperatures creeping into the low 20s by Monday.”

The warm weather is expected to see a surge in demand for barbecues, with Asda reporting a sales increase of 142 per cent while Marks and Spencer report sales of its barbecue range are expected to double on last year.

Superdrug has reported an increased demand for beauty products such as false toe nails, wax strips and fake tan.

Last year’s May Day holiday saw rain and a maximum temperature of 16C in Devon.
