After the hottest day... here come the flash floods

THE hottest day of the year could be followed by flash flooding in parts of England, forecasters warned last night as the sunshine made way for heavy showers.

The Environment Agency and Met Office said communities in some areas of southern, central and eastern England were at risk of floods today.

Light showers are expected along the Yorkshire coast but no weather warning is place for the region.

Temperatures rose to 30C in parts of the county yesterday as the country basked in a heatwave. The warmest temperature in the region was 31.3C, recorded in Leconfield in the East Riding.

A school in Hebden Bridge was forced to postponed its sports day because of the heat.

Stubbings Infants’ head teacher Kath Godfrey said: “Weather forecasts for the afternoon predict that temperatures will reach 28C in the shade. The welfare of our children is of paramount importance and we have taken the decision to postpone the school sports day until the next morning, when temperatures will be cooler.”

Health bosses in Sheffield urged people to take care in the hot weather after the accident and emergency department at Northern General Hospital and the Minor Injuries Unit at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital saw an increase in the number of people attending with minor injuries in the past two days.
