Attacker who broke man’s jaw jailed

A MAN broke another’s jaw in two places when he repeatedly punched him after confronting him in his home.

Shaun Cockerham, 41, was at his girlfriend’s home in Dawtree Walk, Ferry Fryston, near Castleford, when they heard neighbours Christopher Shaw and Sarah Hewitt arguing.

His girlfriend, Carrie Gill, decided to go round to see if everything was all right but returned claiming Mr Shaw had threatened to hit her.

Cockerham, who had a record for offences of violence, then decided to go round to remonstrate with Mr Shaw but once there they argued and he began punching him.

Richard Walters, prosecuting, told Leeds Crown Court yesterday Mr Shaw was shouting at Cockerham to get off him but was struck twice on the floor before the violence stopped when his attacker realised one of the children in the family was screaming at witnessing the incident.

Mr Shaw said he could feel his jaw hanging loose and he was bleeding. He was taken to Pinderfields Hospital where he spent four days. He had to have a metal plate inserted and undergo a second operation some time later.

Cockerham, 41, admitted inflicting grievous bodily harm on February 11 and was jailed for two years.

He had already been recalled to custody because of the assault breaching his licence on an earlier jail term.
