And now Barnsley has a new claim to fame - as the Yorkshire pudding capital of the UK.

Asda, a Yorkshire institution which celebrates its 50th anniversary this month, has decided to mark the upcoming Yorkshire Day by revealing the top Yorkshire pudding eaters across the country - and Barnsley batters the opposition.

There have been more than 24 million Yorkshire puddings sold at Asda over the past 12 months, up more than a quarter of a million on the year before, and people in Barnsley bought more than 80,000 of them.

This puts them some 8,000 ahead of the competition, and the other locations making up the top five are Glasshoughton, Killingbeck, Rotherham and Boldon, Tyne and Wear.

Melissa Skaife, Asda buyer, said: “Yorkshire Puddings are back in vogue thanks to chefs such as Jamie Oliver who have championed them, and our customers in Barnsley have clearly had twelve months of Yorkshire Pudding heaven.

“There are those who don’t like Yorkshire Puddings – but as we say in Yorkshire... we couldn’t give a Dickie Bird what they think.”

Yorkshire Day will be celebrated this Saturday to showcase what is great about the region. Dozens of events are being staged across Yorkshire.
