Basketball player honoured

FORMER England basketball player John Amaechi was honoured with an OBE yesterday in a ceremony conducted by the Prince of Wales, in recognition of his services to sport and the voluntary sector.

The openly-gay sportsman went on to suggest that homophobia remains rife in British sport, singling out professional football as a hotbed of prejudice.

He said anti-gay sentiment in sporting institutions and on the pitch was a “massive problem” that was often ignored or “relegated”.
