Blunkett hints at candidacy for police role

FORMER Home Secretary David Blunkett has refused to rule out standing to become South Yorkshire’s first elected Police Commissioner.

Mr Blunkett said he was “very reluctant” to consider it but is “prepared to listen” to what the Labour Party wanted.

Labour has vehemently opposed the idea of the commissioners, but lost a House of Commons battle earlier this month and the first elections will take place next November.

Mr Blunkett told the Yorkshire Post: “I’m very reluctant, but I’m not going to make a decision on that until the Labour party in Sheffield and South Yorkshire have had a chance to look at what they want. I’m prepared to listen to the Labour Party in South Yorkshire.”
