Bodies found in river search for missing girls

Dive teams searching a fast-flowing river for two teenage girls missing since yesterday afternoon have recovered two bodies, Northumbria Police said last night.

The pair were spotted getting into trouble as they played in the River Wear at Fatfield, Washington, Tyne and Wear, at 3pm.

An off-duty policeman and a member of the public initially tried to save the two teenagers, who have not been identified, before around 100 emergency service personnel joined the search and rescue effort.

Last night a police spokesman said one body had been recovered, but added that officers were still searching the area.

Earlier police revealed that an off-duty officer who was out running dived into the river and saved a boy who was trying to rescue one of the girls.
