Boost for fight to stop women offending

Yorkshire projects to turn women away from crime are among 26 across England to receive vital funding under a one- off deal between the National Offender Management Services and a coalition of charitable trusts.

The local community projects have been running for two years after receiving an initial grant from the Ministry of Justice but a new £3.2m funding deal will enable them to carry on work such as drug and alcohol treatment programmes.

However, in future the projects will have to establish funding through local partnerships.

Among the projects receiving money are the Together Women Projects ,in Hull and Leeds, Evolve WomenCentre Ltd, in Calderdale and Kirklees, and the Cambridge Centre, in Scarborough.

The additional funding has come from the Corston Independent Funders’ Coalition, an alliance of charitable trusts including the J Paul Getty Jr Trust and the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund.

LankellyChase Foundation chief executive Peter Kilgarriff, representing the Coalition, said: “We look forward to more women getting a chance to change their lives and stop offending.”
